Pupil Interviews

Initial pupil interviews were carried out with groups of four or five pupils, either one or two groups from each class. These are audio-recorded and are being transcribed at present. They are also video-recorded, so that if necessary, pupils making particular comments can be identified for matching with other interview comments, assessment responses and classroom roles. The initial pupil interview schedule covers similar themes to that for the teachers, but rather than focus on the teaching, it explored the pupils’ perception of the classroom and the nature/degree of participation in activity. It also explored the pupils’ perception of learning and how this was brought about by their teacher.

The pupil interviews were coded using themes drawn from teacher interviews and relevant literature, together with a small number of new themes that emerge from the data.
