The lesson notes and reflective dialogues are being analysed using the Analysing Teaching and Learning in Activity Settings (ATLAS) framework devised for the project to produce case studies with a standard format concerning the setting (relevant features only); learning objectives and task set; activity being carried out and the teacher/pupil orchestration of affordances and constraints in order to support the production and learning goals; reflection on activity carried out in class. The initial stage involves creating a rich description of each phase of classroom activity from the field notes, characterised in terms of the activity, the pupils' goal, the contribution made by features of the setting and attributes of the pupils to the potential and structure for activity, the orchestration of these features by the teacher and pupils, the reflective aspects of the activity, and the learning potentially taking place. This process is aided by the video recordings and the reflective dialogues with teachers and pupils. The lesson descriptions are being used by individual researchers to create case studies in themselves, and will be compared across subjects and phases and related to initial teacher and pupil interviews.
